I have 10 different marketing gurus telling me 10 different things. Which advice should I actually follow?
One guru says X, another says Y. Learn how to filter marketing advice and find what actually works for YOUR business.
It's exhausting to be told you need a LinkedIn strategy, a TikTok strategy, and a paid ad strategy all at once. This constant stream of conflicting advice happens because most 'gurus' only teach what worked for *them*, not what works for your micro business right now.
Why This Happens
1You're building without a foundation. When you don't have a simple written plan, your business becomes vulnerable to every shiny new tactic pushed by outside experts. Without a filter, everything sounds urgent and important.
2You're chasing platforms instead of people. Jumping into Instagram or podcasts because someone told you to—without first verifying if your specific ideal customer is actually active there—wastes time and creates confusion about what's "working."
3You're confusing awareness with conversion. Mistaking generic awareness activities like viral posts for actual conversion activities that generate sales leads to frustration when views don't translate into revenue. Not all marketing advice addresses the same part of your customer journey.
4The guru incentive model is broken. Most advice is performance-based content designed to get clicks ("The one thing you MUST do this year") rather than being built on sustainable, long-term business strategy. Their business model rewards controversy and urgency, not your success.
Quick Fixes to Try First
Try these solutions before diving deeper
1Audit the advice (10 minutes). Write down the 3 most recent conflicting pieces of advice you've received. Cross off any advice that doesn't directly relate to getting a paying lead this week. This immediately reveals what's noise versus what's actionable.
2Define your filter (5 minutes). Look at your 1-Sentence Value Proposition and write it on a Post-it note. Stick it to your monitor and use it to ruthlessly screen all future advice. If the tactic doesn't help communicate or deliver that value, ignore it.
3Focus your energy (5 minutes). Remove all but your chosen primary marketing channel. If you chose email marketing as your focus, turn off social media notifications entirely. Eliminate the physical ability to be distracted by conflicting advice.
